Is there a new song from the old words written? Yes, when the report is heard that was given. When the arm of the Lord is revealed at last. When the message rings true and is held steadfast.
He’s not much to look at. No flair, undesirable. He’s despised. He’s rejected. He’s full of sorrow and griefs. We turn our eyes away- and all else we seek.
The Eternal Father, out of love, sent His Son – to be dishonored and shamefully treated by His human creation.
This is His Story. This is His song. Yet, He prays for us all, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’ve done. They don’t know that their griefs and their sorrows I have taken all on Myself. With great stripes I was beaten, but My Story grows old on the shelf.
I was wounded for their sins. Despised and rejected and spit upon and mocked. The punishment for all of it, Dear Father, I take. That they may heal and one day have peace, when the veil is lifted, and they see the light of My face.
They’ve all gone astray. There’re none good, not one. I’m afflicted, I’m oppressed, Father God, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
I bow My head. I surrender My will. “It is finished.” It is done.
Sins debt’s been paid in full by the Son.
Do we turn and walk away with each new day? Or do we acknowledge Him and bow at His feet. There is nothing beautiful about that old wooden cross, until one believes the report that’s been given, and finally stops … and sees how amazing love and sorrow meet:
- When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride. - Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood. - See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown? - Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all. (Isaac Watts, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross).
