“My rest is in heaven, my rest is not here, Then why should I tremble when trials are near? Be hush’d my dark spirit, the worst that can come But shortens thy journey, and hastens thee home. It is not for me to be seeking my bliss, Or building my hopes in a region like this; I look for a city that hands have not piled, I pant for a country by sin undefiled.” (CH Spurgeon, Devotional Bible). ‘Heaven has a foundation. The earth has none.’ Didn’t God speak through the broken and inspired vessel of Job, wisdom for all the ages: “He hangs the world upon nothing.” (1) Some seek a city out of sight, a better country with foundations, whose builder and maker are God Almighty. ‘ Father Abraham had many sons. Many sons had father Abraham – I am one of them, and so are you, so let’s just praise the Lord…’ –But are we all sons of Abraham? “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” (2) ‘Abraham looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” (3) What are we looking for? Are we looking beyond this world for our portion? Or are we like the multitudes in the Dark Ages who believed the world flat? What are we looking for? Do we see beyond our eye’s view, and set our passion on eternal, heavenly things? Without faith, we see only hopelessness and pain…but think again! Think again! Is Abraham our father? “ He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” He is the father of the believing! ‘Many sons had father Abraham. I am one of them, and -how about you? Perhaps, this is the day to consider faith in God the Father who has provided redemption through His Son and has sent His Holy Spirit to remind of things that are true. Perhaps it is time to turn off CNN and to open up the Good News. “Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity.” “Open our hearts, dear Lord. Wash the hardness away. Turn the light on, dear Jesus, that I might breathe again. Increase my faith! Help me not fear. Open my eyes to see Your face, and draw me near, draw me near! The words to the old hymn, let them teach me again. That I might be renewed by the power of truth: 1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! 2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. 3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity. 4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. “Yes, Lord. We seek a city out of sight, whose builder and maker is You, the God of all creation. You, who alone, build heaven with foundations of Solid Rock and our precious Cornerstone!” ‘Father Abraham had many sons…I am one of them, and so are you! So let’s just praise the Lord! Amen!’ (1) Job 26:7. (2) Genesis 15:6, Romans 4:3, Galatians 3:6 and Romans 4:22. (3) Hebrews 11:10. |
