I repost what I continually need to be reminded. His life, His word, is comfort for all of time…

"My foot slips!" "I feel surrounded!" Your mercy&love will carry me…
“My foot slips!” “I feel surrounded!”
Yes, there are days when it seems I am truly ‘walking in the shadow of death!’
“Just take your next breath!” I say, “Just take your next breath!”
Paralysis has set in, but I’m still breathing! I’m still breathing!
I won’t panic, yet my thoughts lead me to do just that!
“He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.” (Ps. 18:34).
“Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand;…”(Isaiah 42:5,6).
I believe You Lord, I give You my hand! Help me Lord, I just don’t understand!
“Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb.”(Ps. 37:1).
This day is more evil than others, it seems Lord. This day is dark and full of trouble. There is even doubt in the truth that You care! There is even doubt that You are here! The battle, the battle, is so thick and dark…
“O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs- O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth! Rise up, O Judge of the earth; Render punishment to the proud. LORD, how long will the wicked, How long will the wicked triumph?”(Ps. 94:1-3).
I don’t have words, but the words have been written. “They utter speech, and speak insolent things; All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves. They break in pieces Your people, O LORD, And afflict Your heritage…Yet they say, “The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob understand.”(Psalm 94:4-7).
So I read on and my eyes catch some light, “If I say, my foot slips, Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up.”
Yes, “satisfy us with Your mercy and lovingkindness in the morning, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” (Psalm 90:14). “Make us glad in proportion to the days in which You have afflicted us, and to the years in which we have suffered evil.” (Ps. 90:15). This is what Your word says.
You are in control, You have allowed hardship and trial. To think that this prayer of Moses speaks the words of my heart. Your word O God, has given me life, Your word O Lord, has given me breath! I will sing a new song, even though it is so very old, “I need Thee every hour, Most gracious Lord. No tender voice like Thine, can peace afford. I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby, temptations lose their power, when thou art nigh…( I Need Thee Every Hour).
And the song of Moses, amplified, reads just like the old hymn, “And let the beauty and delightfulness and favor of the Lord our God be upon us; confirm and establish the work of our hands, yes, the work of our hands confirm and establish it.”(Psalm 90:17).
And even more than that, God will take care of the wicked, even though it seems right now they are getting away with it all, He’s got hold of my heart, I can see it all now, He brought me a peace that surpasses even my own understanding: “For the Lord will not cast off nor spurn His people, neither will He abandon His heritage. For justice will return to the [uncomprimisingly] righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it.” (Psalm 94:14,15).
Yes, Your word puts a new song, a new train of thought in my mind,” I need Thee, O I need Thee, every hour I need Thee, O bless me now my Savior, I come to Thee.”
Your word O Lord has increased my faith.
Your presence O God inhabits my praise.
There is joy again. There is hope.
My countenance has changed! My foot no longer slips in this moment in the battle. God has rescued me, time and time again. And in the future when my thoughts set out to destroy me again, I will remember the words which have already been written. Written for me, because You, O LORD – delight – in – me. This is true, so I will talk to my soul when my foot starts to slip:
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.”(Ps 42:5)
“Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might and the strength of His power; Not one is missing.” (Is. 40:26).
God is big, God is great, and He is with you right now, don’t forget, He’s got hold of your hand. He took hold of mine, and He’s kept me breathing!
He brought strength to my feeble knees, when I got my eyes off the road and unto the hills. And I remembered, His power is shown in the lives of the weak. We must set our eyes on things above, our confidence must always be simply in Him, “A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench…”(Matthew 12:20).
Others may scoff, but You God breathe in me, simply breathe, that my breath continues and You help me stand.
“Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God you may receive the promise.”(Hebrews 10:35,36). So give me endurance to keep walking with You. As I take hold of Your hand every morning before I even leave my bed, help me remember just what Your word has said!
And, “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
I will chose to “hold fast the word of life…” But wait, even when I’m too weak to hold on, You’ve shown me through the trouble, You’ve got a hold on me.
My foot almost slips, You know me by name, Your mercy and love, O God,… that is what carries me.
And tomorrow when the fear comes rushing back in, I’ll remind myself, You have not let go of me.
“You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up…”(Ps. 18:35).
Your right hand holds me…”You enlarged my path under me; So that my feet did not slip!” (Ps. 18:36,) exclamation point put there by me!
a mama remembers …
Children are a gift from God. Have you been around a child today? Let us stop and take notice then, that they are excited about simple things, they often skip as they go! They are happy to see you, if you simply greet them with a smile. And if you take even a bit more time, you can see Jesus in their eyes.
Children are our teachers, Lord. Children show us over time, things about ourselves, we would rather not know.
I remember a day, when I felt ‘surrounded’ by little ones. ‘They’ did this, ‘they’ broke that, ‘they’ just pushed my buttons! I remember in desperation crying, “Lord, where is the love? God, where is the love?!” I had all the ‘how-to’ books, but I knew something was missing! “God, I have no love!”
“Toni, I AM love. Keep your eyes on Me. Keep finding the meaning of ‘love’ by taking a walk each morning, with My word on your lap. In the ‘in-between’ time, make the most of your time. Follow Me in the stories, watch Me, and not mere men, who often ‘love’ by condition, that is not who I AM.”
“My love is not based on any condition at all. My love is based completely on My Name. My name is Gracious, Compassionate, Slow to Anger, and more. Put your eyes on Me, you will discover one thing, when you seek for My face, you will discover that I walk in love …not as the world or even the philosophers at that, I walk, each step in My Father’s will, I walk with the Spirit of God.”
“Yes, grace is getting what you don’t deserve.” You deserve justice, but I give you favor instead. “How and Why”? You think in your head, but I will tell you, My ways are past finding out, the wiggle and squirm and all the loud noises, are only to show you what you are like to Me! Can’t you see it? It is true, but My mercies are new every morning, yes new every day. I love you My child, ‘let the children’, I say!”
“Ask and I will give you the good and perfect gift of My Spirit. My power is made perfect in weakness, seek Me while it is day. I AM able to give you out of My fullness, one grace after another.”
Today, Lord, let the children, they teach me. Children are Your gift! They make us ‘poor in spirit’, yes, we see our need for grace! We thought we knew love, only to discover we had none at all- Jesus, fill our hearts with Your love, revive us here, revive us there, revive now and everywhere:
“Revive us a gain; Fill each heart with Thy love; May each soul be rekindled With fire from above. Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Hallelujah! Amen! Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Revive us again!” (Revive Us Again, William P. Mackay).
“For out of My fullness, out of all My abundance, I will pour out My Spirit to My sheep who have young, even as the years go by and the vessel feels broken, I will restore the years that the locus has eaten. I will, I am willing, to give to My children blessing upon spiritual blessing. Even favor upon favor, and gift [heaped] upon gift’.( John 1:16, Amplified). I AM able, I AM able, I AM, and I will!”
“We praise Thee, O God, For the Son of Thy love; For Jesus, who died And is now gone above.” “We praise Thee, O God, For Thy Spirit of light, Who has shown us our Savior And scattered our night.” “All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain, Who has borne all our sins and hath cleansed every stain.”
Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Hallelujah! Amen! Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Revive us again!” (Revive Us Again, William P. Mackay).
So, in my heart, in my prayer I ask the words that Jesus said, “Let the little children come unto to Me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven!”(MATTHEW 19:14). The children are our teachers, Lord. As we choose to let the little children be part of our lives, give us courage, give us grace, ‘revive us again; fill each heart with Thy love; may each soul be rekindled with fire from above!’ Help us to ‘Be a Blessing’ and when those children get unruly, help us pray without ceasing: “Revive us again! We are just like them, TRULEY!”
“Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
“Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.” Mark 9:33-37).
“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17).
“And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:16, 17).
"Be of good cheer?" YES! Be of good cheer.
“So, you ask Me, “Be of good cheer?” when I’ve made you to lie down, with great loss and humility. I have allowed tribulation, where you cry out, “Oh my God! Oh my God!” but my child, you can’t see it now, but when the dust begins to settle, you will take notice, the pastures you’ve been made to lie down on are covered with green sod.”
“Can you hear My voice say, “I see your strength indeed, is small.” And you respond, “You’ve said it Lord, it is true, it is true.” “But what comes next my child, you do know this hymn, what does it say, “Child of weakness, watch and pray, find in Me, your All in All.” Yes, perhaps you’ve sung these treasured words, but today they were written specifically for…you.”
“Be of good cheer?” “Be of good cheer?” Today, today- it’s the HOW? that’s not clear. ‘In this world you will have tribulation’,You warned us ahead, but I had no idea, no idea the blows I would receive…”Be of good cheer?” O GOD, what else is it that You’ve said?”
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I AM your God,“(Is. 41:10), these are My words for you today. Be of good cheer, I am with you right now, “It is I; do not be afraid,” (Mark 6:50), ” remember, ‘I AM your God! I am YOUR God!’ that is how! that is how!
“Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world,” I will give you sufficient grace to rise above this present weakness. I will give you grace sufficient-remember the biggest diamonds lie under the heaviest stones. I will increase your faith, that you may turn away these heavy burdens. Faith, my child, faith in My love, is what’s needed, even more… than FITNESS!
“Turn over the burdens and cast them to Me, you will ‘find My power, and mine alone, can change a leper’s spots and melt a heart of stone’. Don’t let your heart grow hard, come meet Me at the Table in the presence of your enemies. That’s where you’ll discover My great healing power as you take of the wine of the new covenant and of the broken bread. You will taste and you will see that you – are – not – alone!
“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from helping me,…”(Ps. 22:1), yes, I’ve spoken these words too. “But be not far from Me, O Lord; O My help, hasten to aid Me,”(Ps. 22:19), this also has been My cry. Remember, remember, remember, I KNOW, and I love you.
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name, [and has personal knowledge of My mercy, love and kindness; and trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no never]”, This is my voice amplified.”
“In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33)“Call unto Me and I will answer you. I will show you great and mighty things, fenced in and hidden, which you do not know…” (Jer. 33:3,Amplified). Yes, you must have strength to turn over those heavy stones, but the strength is all Mine, My love is Agape, TRUE and ALWAYS, of the FOREVER kind!”
“Let Me lead you, and let your words be few. Lean not on your own understanding, fix your eyes on Mine, and come often to My Table that I’ve prepared for you. Moment by moment, not just a one time thing, walk with me My child, let Me be your breath, you’ll discover I make My abode in the Song that you sing:
“For nothing good have I, Whereby Thy grace to claim; I’ll wash my garments white, In the blood of Calvary’s Lamb. And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete; “Jesus died, my soul to save,” My lips shall still repeat: “Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it…white – as – SNOW!”
“How, you ask. How? by remembering My promises My child. “Your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is His Name.”(Is. 54:5), “Seek Me, you will find Me, call upon Me for I am near. I will hear your call, ‘child of weakness watch and pray, find in Me, thine all and all!”
It's gotta be more than 'Sunday-school answers'…
It’s gotta be more than ‘Sunday-school answers!’
It's gotta be more than 'Sunday-school answers'…
The Sunday school-teacher prays in the back before the colorful, playful children come in, “Oh Lord, help me make it real, the truth about You, so it’s more than fancy dress and what we do on this day, and later a family meal.”
“Yes, Jesus Loves me, the Bible tells me so…”
“I know all the stories!” the 6 year old proclaimed as she skipped in the room with ‘cute as a bug’ delight! “Yes, we know all the answers, we’ve got this one down. Jesus died on the cross and today He couldn’t be found. The tomb was empty, we know the whole thing- so what are we doing today during Sunday School – sing?”
“Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so…”
“I think I have a story or two, you might not know,” the teacher shared to the class, praying that the Lord would send His Holy Spirit, and FAST!” “Without Me you can do nothing,” was the teacher’s very next thought, “Lord, that’s so true, so don’t leave me hanging, empower me now with a supernatural kind, “Hosanna, Hosanna! Save NOW, my dear Lord, I pray these kids SEE and HEAR, that they see and hear from their hearts – not just their minds!
“Jesus was in agony on that tree, on that cross. Did you know that others scoffed at Him then, even then in His pain?” “Oh yes, we know that,” but their faces looked lost. “Did you know it was yelled,’Save Yourself now,You saved others in the past, Can’t You do it again? Aren’t You the Son of God, at last?'”
“Why didn’t Jesus save Himself from the cross? Why didn’t He call down the angels from heaven, the whole heavenly host? Why didn’t He stop this whole dreadful thing? Why did He suffer such pain and such loss?”Why did Jesus stay nailed and pierced that horrible day?” Children, can you tell me, “What held Jesus there, can any of you say?”
“It was our sin!” “It was our sin,” they answered again. “It was our sin,” they all thought in their minds, that’s the answer. It’s a ‘Sunday School answer’, it’s quick and it’s right, but it was lacking 17 inches, 17 inches of insight…
“Children why did Jesus stay hanging on that cross on that day?” “It was our sin.” “Yes, our sin,” ALL the children said.
“Jesus could have called down a whole heavenly host to save Him, but He didn’t, He didn’t! Children,” (the teacher stopped to catch a breath and some Help), “Jesus stayed on that horrible cross on that day because…of His love. His love, that is all. He stayed nailed to that cross on that day for only one reason, because Jesus loves you and He loves me too, not just today, but throughout every season.
There was silence for a mere moment. The children didn’t know. It’s as if they’d never heard it, never heard it before. 17 inches from their mind, straight to their hearts…”It was His love that held Him there. It was for me, He didn’t part.
“Jesus loves me this I know…“,but can we really ‘know?’ We just just can’t understand it. Our sin didn’t keep Him on the cross on that day … Time went slowly, the agony and pain, were endured because Jesus was thinking our names.
He didn’t save Himself, even though He could. He chose to suffer, so we would never be alone.“Jesus loves me, He who died. Heaven’s gate to open wide. He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in…”
It’s gotta be more than the dress and the show. It’s gotta be more than ‘Sunday School answers’ you know. If they could just hear His heart… “If they could only understand it all, Father.” “My Son, My Son, We witness them growing. They SEE, they HEAR, and they will one day KNOW, and they will be like a seed, planted by flowing waters, We will watch them, as the years come, as the years go… yes, they will grow.”
“Father, they are so beautiful, so beautiful to Me. I love each one, each and every child. Right now they have all the right answers, but oh, how I long, how I long for their hearts. Do You think they can see Me in that seed that they planted, in that little pot of soil? Bless all teacher’s toil! They didn’t know that the seed had to die, but that’s what I did, so that they could have life!
“Jesus take this heart of mine, Make it pure and wholly Thine; Thou has bled and died for me, I will hense-forth live for Thee.”
“Yes, Father, as I’m the seed placed in the good soil. I came to die, but that’s not the end of the story! The seed then explodes with life and great beauty. I in them, and they in Me – the planting, the death yes, has to occur, but the promise of beauty and life is secure – forever, forever, forever-more!”
Jesus loves me! He will stay, close beside me all the way… It’s true, even if it takes years to ‘get it!’ ‘Jesus will stay’ and never give up, never, never a day! Because He showed us His love by staying on that cross. He died, but He shook up the earth in the process, and life everlasting is now the believer’s promise!
It’s gotta be more than a ‘Sunday-school answer’, it’s gotta be a Seed of love pressed in the soft soil! But oh when that happens, there is Joy evermore in the Father, the Son, and the Spirit and more – the angels rejoice and the earth quakes and the flower springs up with beauty and grace!
“Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so!”
"There is a river…", "Shall We Gather at the River?"
There are times when I wake, that I wake up feeling very ‘little’, very ‘small’. There are mornings when I wake up feeling, even in those first moments of the day, like I dwell in the energy and the franetic-ness of Times Square in NYC.
Do you ever wake up feeling that your life is like a bustling city? “There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High God is in the midst of her;”
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High God was in the midst of the children of Israel, and THAT is where God dwelt THEN, and today the Bible says that those who believe on Him that the Father has sent, (yes, that ‘Him’ is Jesus), that WE are the Temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in us. (1Cor. 3:16.)
Jesus declared,”If any man thirst, let him come unto Me and drink and out of his innermost being shall gush forth torrents of living water.” (John 7:37,38) But wait, why are we so thirsty Lord? Fill me Lord, Fill us Lord with Your Holy Spirit! How we need a filling of the ‘river whose streams make glad the city of God. ”God is in the midst of her; She shall not be moved.” There is a hymn that moves my feet right to the river:
“Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod; With its crystal tide forever Flowing by the throne of God?”“Yes, we’ll gather at the river. The beautiful, the beautiful river. Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.” (Shall We Gather at the River? Hymn by Robert Lowry, 1864).
Shall we gather at the river, even though we just got out of bed? Yes, in our minds, let Him take us, Oh Lord, transport us from the chaos of our thoughts and cause us to hear Your lovingkindness , to hear You speak, “Come to the waters and drink, for there is a river…God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.”
“On the margin of the river, Washing up its silver spray, We will walk and worship ever, All the happy golden day, “ (well, I think there are times when I would like to change the wording, so the verse actually reads, “We will walk and worship ever, even in the ‘hectic’ frantic day!)
Can you hear the voice of Jesus speaking to you personally, even today, calling out your name, calling out my name, “Come to the rivers of water and drink… ‘there is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, (and that) God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.”
Yes, we’ll gather at the river – sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, sinners young and sinners old-“Ere we reach the sining river, Lay we every burden down. Grace our spirits will deliver, And provide a robe and crown. Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river. Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.”
“Soon we’ll reach the shining river, Soon our pilgrimage will cease, Soon our happy heart will quiver With the melody of peace. Yes, we’ll gather at the river…”“There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.” (Ps. 46:4-6).
“The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah, (pause and think calmly of that!)“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah”(Ps. 46:10,11). (pause and think calmly of that).
Shall we gather at the river? Oh, yes, Oh yes, we find our peace in the midst of ‘hectic’ there – because ‘God is in the midst of her’,“Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river, Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.” (Robert Lowry, 1864).
"Like a sheep", "like a tree", "as a child!"
You and I live in a broken world. Much of the attack from a constant enemy is in our minds. There are pressures in this world. We are motivated to ‘become more’. The media tangles tempting ‘carrots’ before our eyes continually and make us feel we are ‘waiting’ to be ‘satisfied’ some future day- we work, we strive,… our minds envision a pyramid idea where we have to ‘break through’ the common ranks to reach the top. At times, the day-to-day feels like we entered the fairgrounds, striving to win the prize, but it seems twisted somehow, almost impossible, and instead of that wonderful prize, we simply get a dollar-store thing, Yet we see the other guy with the prize, so the striving continues… and the theme song on the mind is: “I can’t get no, satisfaction!
So we’ve been taught by the world, to hear the words, “Tomorrow! Tomorrow! But the greatest of all the prophets who was a ‘voice crying in the wilderness,’ saying “turn around’. Turn around and see … The Lord’s voice is One as a Shepherd, the Good Shepherd whose call is, “Today!” “Today!”
“Today!” “Today!” Come follow Me. So for those who choose to turn around, all of a sudden the ground seems sound, and the path is narrow and the grass is gentle. In view is a tree, not just leaves but full of fruit, and streams of living water flow close nearby. “Trust in Me and feed on My faithfulness. Delight yourself in Me, I am able to give you the desires of your heart.” “Today, today , I call you by name, I lead you out, I don’t drive you alone. Dwell in My pastures, I protect and provide, and I love you more than My life.
“Today! “Today!” As I lead your way in this world as you go, bear fruit, bear fruit! That is your goal! From the rivers that flow within be successful in Kindness, be a success in Love! Be brilliant in faithfulness and gentleness and self control! With your eyes fixed on Me and your ears tuned to My voice, no matter how rough the trial, in My presence is Joy! I abide in your praises, so remember that peace is only a song away from the torrents inside you. The song empowers patience as you learn of Me, and even when treated wrong, you see I was as well, I give you all that’s needed to do what’s good and right as you walk in My sight.
Be “as a child” and take My hand. I will lead you and guide you with My righteous right hand. Do you miss the fairgrounds, where the call is “Tomorrow?” Ok, let’s go back to speak to whosoever will listen. We will call out, “Today! “Today” and and as we call we will pray, that others will turn, and admit they’ve sinned and believe on My Name, and commit their direction to follow My love and affection, and be filled with the spirit to make an impact around them. To ultimately be a blessing to all those around them!
"I sing the Mighty Power of God
and clouds arise and tempests blow,
By order from Thy throne.
While all that borrows life from Thee
Is ever in Thy care;
And everywhere that man can be, Thou, God,
art present there.”
This is a hymn of Isaac Watts written in 1715. And in just a few little lines Isaac Watts reminds me of the promises of God in the flowers, even though God has allowed the trials to come much like the clouds,(out of nowhere,)that I am ‘ever in His care,’ and that no matter what, God is with me.
What a sweet treasure verse three of ‘I Sing the Mighty Power of God’ is. The other verses remind us of His mighty power, His flowing seas, His lofty skies, His sun and moon and stars. And His wonders of creation – but verse three,
brings everything down to you and me.
Because I can see all the magnificence – and enjoy the wonder of it all –
but I need to hear His voice.
So the sweet reminder,‘There’s not a plant or flow’r below But makes Thy glories known…’But it’s not all sweet, that is, if you were the seed that was originally planted.
Yes, God speaks to me with the flowers. The way that the stars are written of in the Bible, God speaks to me through the flowers. Do you remember Psalm 19?
“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech…There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard…and their words to the end of the world.”
Well, for me, I cannot stay up late because I am worthless in the evening- I find that speech in the flowers. What is its speech?
It is not easy, it is not pretty – but when I look at the flower I see the prize and it keeps me on the right path.
“What is it’s speech?” You might be saying, get on with it.
“There’s not a plant or flower below But maketh Thy glories known…’
They speak the words of Jesus,
“The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.
Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and
dies
it remains alone; but if it dies,
it produces much grain.” John 12:23,24.
You see, we can’t see the flower, until there was a death that had occurred. But because a grain of wheat fell into the ground and died, it then sprouted and grew and was nourished and brought forth fruit.
And things in life happen that are ‘not fair’! Things happen that hurt and bring scars – Jesus knows.
He was mistreated and misunderstood, He was hurt and has scars. He prayed,“Not My will, Father, but Yours be done.” and He willingly went to the cross and
died.
But now there is so much life, so much life- everlasting life to all who believe!
So what does this mean for you and for me?
Am I willing to lay down my rights? Am I willing put off my pride? And for what?
For the promise, for the Promise:
“As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
rooted , (just like a plant,)and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught…”
It’s hard to die to ‘self!’ But remember the flower and all of its beauty.
‘Rooted and built up…as you have been taught’,
You might be saying, “Remind us, what have we been taught? There is too much dirt right now in this dying stuff, not a lot of color, just darkness! Please keep it simple!”
In a child’s version, here it is:
“God has chosen you and made you His holy people. He loves you. So always do these things:
Show mercy to others, (don’t give them what they deserve!)
Colossians 3:12.
“This is way too hard!” you might be saying.
Remember the fruit, remember the flowers!
“Be kind,
humble,
gentle,
and patient.” Colossians 3:12.
“Death” is the appropriate word here! Most definitely!” you might be saying as well.
Oh, yes, but the fruit, remember the flowers!
“So do not be angry with each other, but forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, then forgive him. Forgive each other because the Lord
forgave you.
Do all these things; but most important,
love each other.” Collosians 3:13,14.
“But I can’t do this,” you might be saying.
You are so right. We cannot do this- but He can!
We cannot forget that
“Christ died, and we have been joined with Christ by dying too.” ( I just make a lot more noise in my dying than He did!)So we will also be joined with Him by rising from death as He did…
We know...(well, if you didn’t know or forgot, you and I now KNOW!) that our old life died with Christ on the cross (when we received Him in our lives),…Anyone who has died is made free from sin’s control.” (!)Romans6:6. Exclamation point mine. We have power over sin because of Him.
“There’s not a plant or flow’r below But makes Thy glories known.” The flowers are the fruit! The fruit of the Spirit is love; joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. Gal 5:22.
“If a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies…”
I cannot do this on my own, but Oh, “I will sing of the Mighty Power of God”, because In Him, I can do all things, even bear good fruit.
‘ a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down’
We just want to get better- as fast as we can!
And when taking medicine, it has been said from ages past that ‘a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.’ And I think we all kind of agree with that!
Well, when it comes to ‘things of God’, I think this statement is true as well.
In life, there are times we find ourselves in ‘crisis’. All of a sudden we feel ‘far from God’. We don’t know what to do or where to turn.It is a time of great anxiety for us all.
So we know we need some spiritual medicine. The sugar? The sugar is the truth that God has said, “Never will I leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5.
The medicine?
It isn’t easy to choke down, but it is powerful. It is truth. It is life transforming when ‘taken’ correctly.
Leviticus 19:2 When the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them:
“You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.”
Don’t be offended, there is no judgement going on, these are God’s words, and I think we feel far from God because we need to remember,
He is a Holy God.
You might be thinking, “This sounds like some kind of ‘Holistic’ medicine.” Forgive the pun!
No, this is God’s basic formula. Have you thought about the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry? ‘He went about all Galilee, teaching…preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of diseases…And great multitudes followed Him – Matthew 4:24. He saw the multitudes, and ‘He went up on a mountain…Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
“Blessed...(that’s kind of like the sugar!) He said, “Happy”.
That is what you and I want. We want to be happy. But the medicine, or the remedy, is not self-assertiveness and confidence. It becomes quite obvious that God’s ways are not our ways when we remember what He has to say that “Blessed...
“are the poor in spirit”
You see, if you and I took a piece of white cloth, but then held it up to an even whiter piece of cloth, we would look at the white cloth and say, “Hmm, it’s kind of yellow.”
God’s holiness is perfection. No matter who we are, we are not holy and perfect. We all fall short.
But He is holy.
We need so desperately, these days to remember, and remind each other that God is Holy. So that we can become…
poor in spirit. Because “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”Matthew 5:3.
It seems so backwards, but it makes perfect sense. We stop comparing ourselves to ‘the other guy’ and begin to see ourselves in light of a perfect and holy God. God is holy and we are not – we become, poor in spirit.
But ‘O how happy’ we now can become, because we see once again
that we need Him. We need a Savior.
Can we come to Him and honestly ask, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.Psalm 139:23.
Blessed are these words, “The LORD is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works. The LORD is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them…”
Once again, the familiar hymn speaks:
“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea…
Only Thou art holy! Merciful and mighty! Perfect in power, In love and purity…”
He alone is holy. He alone is near to all who call upon Him…
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,’ and in His time, He makes all things beautiful. A ‘spoonful of sugar’ is faith, and hope in believing Jesus,…His Name is like honey on my lips, His Spirit washes and cleanses, My Father in heaven Your kingdom is come, I praise and hallow Your Name… and in the praise and in the worship and in the lifting up of my hands,
“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Though the darkness hide Thee, Thou the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see. Only Thou art holy; There is none beside Thee Perfect in power, In love, and purity!”
I wait on You, for “Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.” and even in the waiting, in ‘brokenness of spirit’, Jesus, my health is restored. Praise be to my holy Father, who sent His son because He loves us so, and comforts us continually with His glorious and Holy Spirit!
“Amen, Amen, Amen, Oh! Let all the children say, Amen!”
"There is a place of quiet and rest…"
Today, today…speaking in a hymn to bring rest in heart and mind: “There is a place of comfort sweet, Near to the heart of God; A place where we our Savior meet – Near to the heart of…”
He paints His presence daily…
Holy Father of Heaven and of Earth, draw me nearer, so much nearer to you, and the children, dear Lord, yes, draw the children too. Nearer to Thee, oh how we busy ourselves. We get moving so fast that we don’t take time to give You our ear. We don’t give You our eyes either, and notice the faithfulness in each rising sun and we forget it’s You… that painted the sunset as we run, here and there everywhere. Oh Father, draw us near!
Remind me again of the story that’s told of Pilgrim’s journey, written so long ago. How he ever so slightly, ever so slight began to keep walking a bit off the path. But in turn it lead him in chains and dismay as he found himself hopeless in ‘Giant Despair’s’ wrath! But in the scroll it is written, that there’s a Way of escape, a Table has been prepared in the presence of our enemies – yes, it’s a ‘cup of blessing’ and ‘bread that’s been broken’ – our Rescuer, our hope… may we see Him who’s been smitten.
But it’s a mystery so deep at times, we feel You’r so distant, so we journey along as time is insistent! Seasons come; the joys and sorrows of Christmas pass, New Year’s promises and the winter’s blast…grace is needed, ‘Want’ and need are the cries of Your sheep – there are no flowers, no songs and mountains seem so, so steep!
“Increase my faith! Help me believe! My unbelief overshadows and brings me down deep!” So ‘deep cries to deep’ my Father of earth, where are You now? “Your kingdom come, Your will be done! I have trouble trusting! Trusting in and waiting on the Faithful One!”
How can that be? I just don’t know, but it’s true and it’s evident in my worry and fret. Winter comes, and sometimes winter stays, and a rut becomes comfort, but a rut brings regret! So, help me ‘do hard things’ , even to lift my eyes…give me courage to pray and to lay down ‘my rights’, that I might not be believing in things that are lies!
It’s hard to humble myself before You dear Lord, and sometimes Your words are ‘just words’. I, like a sheep hear… but don’t understand:’flee from idolatry’, and ‘resist satan’s roar’- Suddenly I find myself instead of ‘fleeing’ just standing there. Just like dear Pilgrim in ‘Giant Despairs’ grasp, now what? what do I do to stay on the path?
“Oh, search me O God, and know me through. Test me and know even my thoughts, I ask You. Is my heart hard as a stone, give me courage to face it, and God in Your great mercy, with ‘flesh’ will You replace it? Not a stone, but a heart soft as flesh, in Your mercy – grant me Your grace and forgiveness.”
“You are the Potter, I am the clay. Mold me and make me, I humbly pray, into a vessel of honor, but can I be twice baked? You see I’ve been broken and set aside, can You use me again? Lead me and guide me in Your Self-Less Way, and when I wake each morrow-morn, may I be able to receive with humility, just what You say.”
Winter – cold and hard, turns into spring. And in the sun and all the new color – we can see with our eyes that Your mercy never ceases and Your love, steadfast and true, is abounding in grace and kindness besides! This is your plan that leads our dark hearts, to see once again, what is True, what is True! It’s true that You love me, it’s true that You care, it’s true that You are always, You are always there!
Summer comes, summer fun and warmth, but the enemy is lurking in our rest and recreation to ‘put off’ the narrow road, ‘oh, it’s just for a season’. But we believe him, we do – and often forget, what God has to say: “Seek Me first, I’m loyal and faithful and love at all times, come to Me you who are weary, I am the Way…”
satan’s a liar, (I can’t capitalize his name), he wants us all to believe that You are hard and demanding with a scowl on Your face, with You, nothing fun is thought to be OK. But You took all my garbage and all of my shame, so I could be free and have real life in me again! You say, “Do you love Me?” And it doesn’t really matter the words that I say, because dear Lord, You’re watching to see if I…simply obey.
But God, there is nothing ‘simple’ in obeying You Lord. But You led by example by walking that Via Delarosa. It reminds me of the cold fall winds that blow hard and strong… but they are needful, yes needful to bring us to our knees. When those cold winds blow, You know their purpose, it’s all good, even though they seem OH SO WRONG!
Winter to spring, and spring into summer, and the fall winds blow all the old leaves away, but the winds make us dig deeper to survive the cold…This is Your plan full of surprises, this is how You paint Your picture for us. New months, new weeks, and with each new day, Your faithful and early sun… rises.
“Can you see Me?” “Can you see Me?” your still small voice speaks and even sings in a song. Many don’t notice, but today I say, “I do!” Your Bride is preparing, your Bride is getting ready. “Help me in my weakness, help me stay on the path even when it’s seems so terribly long.”
Your face! Your face! As we ‘run this race! Through the journey we go in the beauty of Your presence! That’s how it is that the joy of the Lord is my strength, Because You are there, even in the valley of the shadows of darkness. You shine in the sky and the Evergreens, even the rocks, You are speaking, and You are Our Ever -present Fortress!
“I will never leave you nor forsake you,” You say. “I will direct your paths for the day.” “I love you with an everlasting love,” You whisper, but, sometimes I make some rough choices, and choose not to listen. I don’t run to the Strong tower that is there, instead like Pilgrim, I think I’ve got it right, but the next moment I find I’m in Giant Despair’s prison!
Oh my! I still walk in circles it seems, forgive me again, my Father of the earth as well as the heavens! And You do, You do, You never give up on Your child. Your love is complete, it’s faithful as the winter that turns into spring, You make all things work together for good, even when I make a mess of things, when I’m head-strong and sometimes wild!
“I want to see You!” I cry. And You answer Me. “Can you see me in the sky I’ve painted for you? Can you see me when it’s dark or shining bright and blue? I am here, when you choose to humble yourself and surrender…I am with you now, abide in Me, FOREVER!”
“Teach me to abide, to You the Vine. I am the branches! Help me not forget! Teach me to abide in You my dear Jesus. Flow through my veins, may Your Spirit guide me yet! Help me from going off the path again, when winter comes, and I’m caught by ‘Giant Despair’, help me see that there is no death in Christ. That hidden inside those ‘dead’ looking trees, is life; Life that is greater than any enemy! Life for today, life for tomorrow. Life for all of eternity!
_____________
“Today you can see Me and feel that I’m near, but tomorrow when You can’t, please remember, I AM here.”
My response is the very first verse I learned when I was three: “I love You Jesus, because You first loved me. I love You Jesus…Because You first…loved me!”
Out of the mouth of babes…
I share this again because courage is something I need this day, and my genuine love for Jesus sharpened… this child is an example of courage and love to me and I pray for many more:
True joy is heaven-"O Beulah Land…"
I repost something I wrote quite awhile ago, praying for those (including myself), who had lost very, very special people in their lives. There was a loss, a void, a great sadness… So in honor of a woman I sat next to at the Regional Championship swim meet just a few weeks ago, and her two lovely girls – who happened to open up to me, that her husband and the girls daddy passed away this day last year, March 25. March 25th will never be the same for them, ever. But I pray that the darkness of night and loss lift a bit when then think of Beulah Land…so near, not far. Very near, forever beautiful…
A Garden Story…
It is a rough bit of ground, very hard with clay soil, with weed seeds planted everywhere in great variety. But it is time ‘to break up this fallow ground’-and deep down, I know, my own heart is as this dry ground.
this ‘fallow ground’ is broken.
This is not easy work. There will be a scent of perspiration. Great amounts of energy will be expended – thoughts ,”I do not have time for this great expedition,” in effort to get me to ‘stop’ – there is pain as the thorns of the nasty weeds, cut!
It sometimes seems like an impossible job – wondering, “how in the world can all these weeds grow so violently when the soil is only clay and rock? Nothing should grow in this soil!”
Breaking up the ‘fallow ground’ in this garden and turning it around to be fruitful just seems like a mountain too high to climb,so to speak. Maybe it just shouldn’t be done -forget about it, it’s just too hard a job. There’s no way all these weeds can be pulled out, there is no way this soil can go from rocky to soft. No, forget it- this is an impossible job.
But there is a messenger with the words, “Don’t you know? Surely you have heard. Hasn’t someone told you from the beginning?”(paraphrased, Is. 40:21).“Didn’t you believe the report you heard? Didn’t someone tell you of the hand of God?” (paraphrased, Is. 53:1).
“He’s the Master Gardener, you know. All things are possible with Him. Didn’t you know that ‘He grew up like a small plant before the LORD and that He was like a root growing in dry ground’?(Is. 53:2). There was nothing strikingly beautiful about His appearance that made Him desirable. Yes, He was ‘a root growing in dry ground.’
“Surely, you know this, that He was hated and rejected by people. He had much pain and suffering. People would not even look on Him. He was hated, and we didn’t even notice Him. But He took our suffering on Himself and felt our pain for us.” (Is. 53:2,3.)
Did we see His suffering in the garden? Did we see Him as He prayed for us? Did we see Him with the crown of thorns on His head? No, we didn’t know. None of us did. ‘We all have wandered away like sheep. Each of us has gone his own way.’ (Is. 53:6). “There is none righteous, no not one; there is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God…” (Romans 3:10,11). Our hearts are like stoney and weed infested gardens. There’s no hope for fruit.
But something has happened. The work has been done: “And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (Luke 22:44). “Surely our griefs he Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried…He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well being…” (Is. 53:5).
The Master Gardener was faithful in a ‘faithless’ land of stones and weeds. The Master Gardener was willing to face the task at hand, the sweat, the thorns, the pain and toil…breaking up of the fallow ground came upon Him; ‘He was wounded for the wrong things we did. He was crushed for the evil things we did, (Is. 53:5, Int. Children’s Version)…that we might be healed.
Something happened, He said, “I am willing.” Something happened, He said, “I believe in you.” ‘He willingly gave His life, He was treated like a criminal. But He carried away the sins of many people. And He asked forgiveness for those who sinned.”
Something happened, He said, “It is finished.”(John 19:30).
The soil is made new, that it might bear fruit. Life will come from each desolate heart ‘ for God so loves ‘His garden, His garden is you and me, without Him we are nothing! “Who has believed His report?”(Is. 53:1). Will you?
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. for you will go out with joy and be led forth with peace; The mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.Instead of the thorn bush the cypress will come up, And instead of the nettle the myrtle will come up…” (Is. 56:10-13).
“God made Him, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Cor. 5:21). And ‘in Him’ He speaks as a Master Gardener to His own, “No longer do I call you servants, but I have called you friends. For all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit ..that whatever you ask the Father in my name,…He may give you.”(John 15:15).
You and I, shall be like a garden …
